My name is Vic, I'm 49 and a half, and I am about to become a vibraphonist. A what? A vibraphonist, or vibist, as some call a player of the vibraphone. A what? A vibraphone - it's like a xylophone for adults, invented in the 1920s and reached its peak popularity with jazz combos of the 50s and 60s.
It's Friday 28th November 2014. I won a vintage Boosey & Hawks Ajax Vibraphone 48 hours ago on eBay.
Can I play it? No, not yet, but I've had two lessons and I thought I'd start a blog to chronicle my progress from half-arsed drummer of limited technique, with a third of a century bashing along to various indie, punk, garage, rock 'n' roll and power pop bands, to Hastings' answer to Cal Tjader.
I'm picking them up this Sunday. I hope you'll enjoy reading this blog as I get to grips with learning to play jazz vibes. Let the fun begin.
